Car key technology began to change in the mid-1990s as manufacturers started to introduce not only keyless entry but also transponder immobilisation systems. The inbuilt security of these systems has increased the security of cars dramatically, but has also increased the cost and complexity of these keys. That depends on the type of lock you wish to lubricate.

  • Pin tumbler locks, such as residential door locks, work best with graphite powder as it doesn’t create surface tension inside the lock like you may get with a wet lubricant.
  • Wafer locks, such as car, roller door, or letterbox locks, are best served by a wet lubricant such as Inox or Rost Off. Do not use a water dispersant like WD40 or sewing machine oil. The former dries out the lock leaving a chalky residue increasing lock issues, and the latter creates surface tension within the lock slowing down the springs and moving parts while also attracting dirt and dust.
  • Sometimes lubrication isn’t enough, and your lock needs a service. If you lubricate it and its function hasn’t improved, it may be time to contact us.
